Mark Benson's new work in the exhibition Basic Essentials, curated by Zoë Taleporos, reveals how target markets are constructed, reinforced and internalized by tapping into our desires. They function as stand-ins for psychological states that yearn for convenience, connection, romance, entertainment, and comfort. Through anthropomorphizing objects and using humor, they evoke empathy in the viewer as each one becomes representative of a unique, relatable protagonist. All work 2018.
